IRCON INTERNATIONAL LIMITED

Ircon International Limited (IRCON), an Indian government company incorporated by the Central Government (Ministry of Railways) under the Companies Act, 1956 on 28th April, 1976 originally under the name Indian Railway Construction Company Limited, is the leading turnkey construction company that has widespread operations in several States in India and in other countries including Malaysia, Nepal, Bangladesh, U.K., and Sri Lanka Now. IRCON has been pioneering the development of Sri Lanka railway infrastructure in the recent years, and currently working on completing the balance length of the Northern Railway projects, including Omanthai to Kankasanthurai and Madhu road to Talaimannar Pier. These projects are funded by the Government of India through the US$ 800 million lines of credit.

Dr Madhu, CEO of Innova Strategies has been assisting IRCON Project with project management consultancy, especially in the areas of project planning, monitoring and controlling using project management standards, tools and techniques. Dr Madhu has been working closely with the IRCON team, assisting them with comprehensive planning using the standard project management methodologies and Microsoft Office project tool.

Railway track up to Madhu Road has been successfully completed and launched to the public on time surprising many stakeholders, and Dr Madhu's contribution with project planning and monitoring through Microsoft Office Project tool was appreciated by the IRCON International team in Colombo. Dr Madhu and Innova Strategies are currently assisting IRCON team with further Project Management training and support services to ensure that team is taking all the necessary action to complete the remaining work of the project also successfully and meeting client expectations.


COMMERCIAL BANK OF CEYLON PLC

Innova Strategies has been working with Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC in building awareness of Project Management and delivering Strategy through projects with Project Management training, consulting, mentoring and coaching. A complete Project Management Training program was launched at the bank in 2008, starting with an introductory training sessions to all IT staff and other supporting service staff to ensure that all Project Management processes and the approach taken to manage projects in the bank are standardized.

STRATEGY

Participants who have performed the best during the initial training named as "Team 21" were then trained with more advanced Project Management skills development programs ranging from 3 to 5 days, to ensure that they are ready to take any challenging project with confidence. Three model projects were selected to validate the application of project management global standards and the best practices, and assess the value addition of this comprehensive training program


OUTCOME

Team 21 worked together with Innova Strategies and delivered the three model projects, including establishing a PMO Process, from Initiation to Conclusion. Few participants have been recommended to take up the PMP Project Management professional exam and certify themselves as Project Management Professionals PMPs. They have achieved 100% passing rate in the PMP exam at their first attempt and currently managing strategically important projects at the bank.

Success of the Project Management Competency Development Program has been reviewed for three years with close monitoring and review sessions, and appreciated by many project managers and the team members in the organization.


THE CEYLON FISHERY HARBOURS CORPORATION

The CHFC was established in 1972 with the aim to deliver high quality fishery-harbour related services and to provide the fishing community with modern infrastructure and facilities. The CHFC's development plan outlines a range of proposed projects to help the Sri Lankan fishing industry to complete effectively with other prominent fishing-oriented countries in the region. A successful implementation of a new ERP system was also facilitated effectiveness of projects and introduced a integrated communication system for the harbours which also has a Vessel Monitoring system.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT

In such a Project Based organization, demand for Project Management awareness, skills and competence were pre-requisites for success. With the aim to achieve organizational project management maturity, Mr. Asanga Abeyagoonasekera, Chairman of Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation has recommended that everyone involved in the projects must understand the benefits Project Management brings in to the organization, and learn how to apply project management tools and techniques to ensure successful project implementation.

As a result of this initiative, Dr Madhu Fernando, CEO of Innova Strategies was invited to conduct a Project Management Awareness Building and Process Mapping program which has eventually contributed to the success of projects at the Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation.

Dr Madhu Fernando has provided Project Management Training to more than 200 delegates from John Keells holdings from 2004. Training started with Project Management awareness building sessions for a selected team from various JKH companies, while Dr Madhu was serving her role as the CEO of PMI Colombo Chapter, and still continuing with many stories of successes. Dr Madhu has trained all the staff in JKH SGIT in 2005 with Project Management, and her most recent projects for JKH, an Advanced Project Management Training program was successfully completed in June 2013 for the Union Assurance PLC.

Project Management Training conducted by Dr Madhu for the JKH Group included Awareness Building and Introductory Sessions, two to three days Project Management standards implementation training sessions and Advanced Project Management training leading to PMI PMP Certifications.
